Why do I fart when I eat potatoes?
It is often said that eating potatoes, especially sweet potatoes, causes farting, and this is certainly our experience.
However, it is still not well understood why sweet potatoes make us fart more easily. Unfortunately, something in sweet potatoes has not yet been discovered.
All we know is that something in the sweet potato is broken down by bacteria in the stomach to form fart gas.
The gas is called mercaptan or hydrogen sulfide, and something in the sweet potato is likely responsible for the gas.
