How do you measure the size of the ocean?

How do you measure the size of the ocean?

Do you know how large the global ocean is?

According to a book titled "Rika Nenpyo," which collects basic data on the earth and space, the total area of the oceans on the earth is 362,822,000 km2, which is 960 times the area of the land of Japan.
The book provides basic data on the Earth and the universe. The earth is shaped like a ball, and based on the photos taken by satellites, the surface of the earth was divided into sections like the eyes of a fishing net. The globe has lines of latitude and longitude, but we divided it into smaller and smaller sections.

The size of the eye of a single stirrup is about 500m square at the equator, and gets smaller as it gets closer to the North and South Poles. For each eye, a map (data) was created to determine whether the area was land or sea, and if land, whether it was a forest, a field, or a town. Based on this data, the area of each of the three sea mazes was calculated, and then summed to obtain the total area of the global ocean.

Nowadays, we can use satellites to get a detailed picture of the world's oceans and land. We can see not only the size and shape of oceans and land, but also how land is used and how nature, such as forests and grasslands, is changing.

While we are on the subject of the size of the oceans, let us also note the size of the land. The total land area of the earth is 147,244,000 km2, or 380 times the land area of Japan. Approximately 70% (71.1%) of the Earth's surface is ocean, and 30% (28.9%) is land.
