How can a TV remote control do that from a distance?

The remote control is really convenient for switching channels and adjusting the volume even when you are away from the TV.
However, there is no sound coming from that remote control, nor is there anything tangible coming from it. It is very mysterious what in the world is moving the switch. It is usually called infrared light.
Think of infrared light as light that is invisible to the human eye. When you push the button on the remote control, infrared rays are emitted from the remote control. When the infrared light hits the part of the TV set that receives it, it activates a device inside the TV set, which changes channels or switches off the TV.
Because infrared rays are light, they cannot travel if there is anything between the TV and the remote control. We have all had the experience of not being able to change the channel because someone was standing in front of the TV.
The part of the TV screen that receives infrared rays is almost always below the screen, so care should be taken not to place any objects in front of it.
