Mr. Jun Goake (NYK Line, 2nd Officer)

From cars and containers to commodities and energy resources. ...... Once on board, you will sail around the world for about six months! We asked Mr. Jun Gomei, second mate of NYK Line, about such a romantic job as a sailor. ......

Question 1: What kind of work do you do?

I work as a seaman, piloting large vessels up to 400 meters in length and transporting goods around the world. We deliver goods that are essential for people's lives to various countries. There are about 25 sailors on board, each of whom is responsible for his or her assigned task. There are those who pilot the ship, those who maintain the machinery on board, and those who plan the voyage. ...... Each of us works every day to ensure a safe voyage, calmly judging things and valuing teamwork!

Question 2: Are there any things that made you happy or made you think it was difficult?

The best part of being a sailor is the scale of your work! You can move a large ship, see dolphins and the Northern Lights during the voyage, and travel around the world, visiting port cities in various countries. ...... The dynamic and romantic nature of the job is what makes being a sailor so rewarding! On the other hand, I sometimes miss my friends and family once I board the ship. Also, in order to keep the ship running safely, I always pay close attention to the weather and surrounding conditions. It is a tough job because I always have to work with a sense of urgency on the ship to prevent accidents from happening during the voyage.

Question 3) What kind of place do you work?

I work on a bridge on a ship. In addition to the steering wheel, there are many other devices on the bridge. There is a digital map to check the position of the ship you are on, a radar detector to detect objects at sea, and a large compass to show the direction the ship is going. There are also lots of other meters to check speed and angles! These devices are checked by several sailors to ensure that the boat is safely maneuvered.

Question 4: How did you become a sailor?

After graduating from university, I started working for NYK and studied at a seafarer's education institute for two years to obtain a navigator's license. I attended a general university, but there are also technical colleges and universities that specialize in seafarer education. If you have a strong desire to become a sailor! you may want to go to an educational institution specializing in seamanship from the very beginning. I work on a ship as a navigator, but you can also work as a seaman as an engineer who maintains the equipment on the ship. There are also people who plan the transportation of cargo and are involved in shipbuilding in a shipping company, and people in various professions support each other in their work.
