Tobi mainly work at construction sites such as houses, buildings, bridges, highways, and dams, assembling and disassembling scaffolding, transporting materials, and performing other work at high places. Tobi who work for major construction companies on large-scale construction sites are called "field steeplejacks," but the names vary depending on the nature of the work. For example, "scaffold steeplejacks" erect scaffolding at construction sites, "steel frame steeplejacks" assemble the frames of steel-framed buildings, "heavy construction workers" install large machinery and other heavy objects inside buildings, and "machine construction workers" operate large machinery. In any case, once the construction work is finished, the part of the work that they were involved in does not come out into the open, and the job of the steeplejack can be described as a behind-the-scenes support role.

No educational background or qualifications are required to work as a scaffold. Anyone who wishes to work as a scaffold worker can get a job at a construction company, its subcontractors, or a civil engineering company that undertakes building or civil engineering work. They start out as apprentices and work their way up to full-fledged craftsmen as they acquire skills on the job site. Under the Occupational Health and Safety Law, those under the age of 18 are prohibited from working at heights (working at a height of 2 meters or more), so until they reach that age, they learn the procedures of the job while doing such work as carrying on the ground.

Although qualifications are not required to start working as a scaffold worker, there are qualifications that become necessary as one progresses in one's career. The law stipulates that "qualified personnel must be engaged in dangerous work" at construction sites, and certification is essential for career advancement, career change, and future independence. The following three certifications are representative of the "three sacred treasures" of scaffold workers. In their 20s and 30s, scaffolders are at their most active as scaffolders, and it is a good time to look ahead to the future and try to acquire these qualifications. In addition, there is a national skill test system called "Tobi Gikushi" that determines the level of a certified scaffold worker.

The construction industry is currently experiencing a serious labor shortage. Dangerous, hard, dirty, and so-called "3K" occupations tend to be disliked, and unfortunately, scaffolding is considered to be one of them. The labor shortage is expected to continue, and many companies are relying on foreign workers. Conversely, however, talented scaffolders are in short supply. As the name "craftsman" implies, scaffolding is a highly specialized occupation that requires experience and skill. The future is rather bright for those with solid skills.

The average annual salary is 3.73-3.77 million yen. Unlike the monthly salary system of salaried workers, most jumpers are paid on a daily basis, with the amount of time they are absent from work or unable to work due to climatic conditions subtracted from their pre-determined monthly salary. If you are a skilled craftsman, allowances and other benefits are added and directly reflected in your income.

Many construction sites are closed on Sundays and holidays, and Tobi basically follows suit. In addition, work may be canceled and work may be closed due to weather conditions such as rain or windy days.

Construction and civil engineering work sites. In most cases, the workers rarely come to the office of the company they belong to, but go directly to a simple rest area built at the site and disperse there after finishing their work.
