Job Details
Cutting trees, growing and managing forests
The work involves cutting down cedar and cypress trees for lumber and planting new seedlings on the land to nurture them. It takes about 50 to 60 years for a tree to reach a size where it can be used as lumber. During this time, the trees need to be cared for, such as weeding and trimming excess branches from the surrounding area. The cut trees are transported to the foot of the mountain using ropes and pulleys, and then loaded onto trucks with excavators and cranes. Cutting the trees is physically demanding work because it is done on steep mountain slopes.
Key Points !
Enter a high school or college with a forestry program.
No qualifications are required to work in forestry, but qualifications to handle chainsaws and excavators are necessary for the job. At high schools and universities that offer forestry courses, students can learn how trees grow and how to cut trees with a chainsaw. After graduating from such schools, students generally go on to work for forestry cooperatives or private forestry companies throughout Japan.
There are also workshops to train forestry workers.
Local entities, such as forestry cooperatives, offer guidance and training sessions for those who have graduated from high school or university, and for those who would like to change careers and try forestry. In addition, each prefecture has a "Forestry Workforce Assistance Center" designated by the governor, which provides consultation services for those who wish to enter the forestry industry.
In the Future
Promising work to grow renewable resources.
Calculated by the ratio of forest area to land area, Japan is one of the most heavily forested countries in the world. However, due to the aging of the population engaged in forestry and the lack of manpower, the mountains are not well taken care of. The Forestry Agency has been making efforts to train forestry workers through the "Green Employment" program, and the government is also making efforts to protect forests. Trees are a resource that can grow and regenerate if planted, and forest protection is becoming increasingly important as a measure against global warming. Forestry as a profession has a promising future.
