Coast Guard divers are responsible for responding to the scene of a ship accident at sea and rescuing people or conducting a diving search for missing persons at sea. They may also pull up items from underwater that are needed to investigate a crime, or remove oil spills from a ship in distress. As Coast Guard officers, divers also operate and maintain patrol vessels, just like other crew members. They are required to have good communication skills as they always work in cooperation with their fellow crew members. The work is quite hard, and physical training and rescue drills are essential on a daily basis.

Key Points !

Become a Coast Guard officer with the Japan Coast Guard.

To become a Japan Coast Guard diver, one must first become a coast guard officer by graduating from the Japan Coast Guard Academy or the Japan Coast Guard Academy. Many of those who are currently working as divers for the Japan Coast Guard are graduates of the Japan Coast Guard Academy. To become a diver at that coast guard academy, one must enroll in the "Ship Operation System Course. After graduation, they gain work experience in the field and undergo training to become a diver. Incidentally, that training can only be undertaken by those who are fit in terms of health and swimming ability. After about two months of very rigorous training, the diver must pass the national examination to become a Japan Coast Guard diver.

If you want to become an officer in the future, go to the Japan Coast Guard Academy.

The Japan Coast Guard Academy is an educational institution that trains future officers. The educational period is four years and nine months. Upon graduation, students are awarded Japan's only bachelor's degree (coast guard). Upon graduation, the graduates are assigned to patrol vessels throughout Japan as entry-level officers.

In the Future

Marine accidents are becoming more and more common in Japan, an island nation, and will continue to attract more and more attention in the future.

Japan is an island nation surrounded by the sea. As a result, fishing boats and sightseeing boats have capsized in many parts of the country. Divers are indispensable for rapid lifesaving, investigation, and search in the sea, but there are concerns that there are not enough of them at present, and the government is considering increasing the number of divers and their bases of operations. In addition, the rescue activities for the "Hokkaido Shiretoko Boat Accident" that occurred in 2022 attracted attention for "saturation diving," which requires special training that enables divers to dive deeper than ordinary divers. Currently, there are no female divers in the Japan Coast Guard, and the reason for this is said to be physical strength. However, there must be areas that can be searched only by small women. We look forward to the birth of female divers who can make the most of their characteristics.
