Mr. Takushi MATSUYAMA (Firefighter, Yokohama Fire Department)

Firefighters work at the scene of fires and disasters to help people in trouble by putting their bodies on the line. Not only do they extinguish fires, but they also provide first aid to people suffering from illness or injury, and rescue people in distress in the mountains! We asked Mr. Takushi Noriyama of the Yokohama City Fire Department about the work of firefighters, who are heroes in the city and protect lives!
Question 1: What kind of work do you do?
I belong to a department called the Police Prevention Division. I respond to dispatch requests from citizens for fire, rescue, etc., and go to disaster sites to save people and prevent damage. To help people, energy, strength, and skill are essential! It is also important for us to hone our skills to quickly use the equipment necessary for rescue operations on a regular basis and to train our bodies through rigorous drills. We also inspect our vehicles and equipment thoroughly every day. It is this kind of training and preparation that allows us to help people in need.
Question 2: Are there any things that made you happy or made you think it was difficult?
Because our work involves human lives, we must always approach our duties with a sense of tension and a strong sense of responsibility. And I never fail to undergo rigorous training on a daily basis in order to acquire the energy to face any situation with courage and the physical strength and skills necessary to save people. Training is hard work, but it is very rewarding when our daily training pays off and we are able to directly save people and prevent damage at the scene of a fire or disaster. The words of gratitude I receive from the people I help are my greatest treasure!
Question 3) What kind of place do you work?
I work at the scene of fires and other disasters. However, when there is no disaster, I stand by in the fire station so that I can be dispatched at any time. I carefully prepare myself by inspecting vehicles and equipment in the garage that houses pump trucks, ladder trucks, ambulances, etc., and by conducting drills so that I can be ready to rush to the scene at any time. Also, since we spend 24 hours a day at the fire station, the fire station has a cafeteria, a sleeping room, and a bathroom. Every room is equipped with a speaker so that when there is a call for a dispatch, we know immediately, no matter where we are!
Question 4: How did you become a firefighter?
I admired my father who was a firefighter and thought, 'I want to be a firefighter someday too. To become a firefighter, one must graduate from high school or college and pass the local civil service recruitment exam to become a firefighter. After passing the exam, they study at a fire academy for six months and are then assigned to fire stations around the city. Then, they gain a lot of experience through rigorous training and at disaster sites to become a full-fledged firefighter. You do not need to worry about the knowledge and skills required to become a firefighter, as you can learn them well after becoming a firefighter. What is more important is that you are passionate about becoming a firefighter and want to help people!
