TOEIC(R) Test

TOEIC(R) Test

An examination to determine the English language skills required for international work. With more and more companies requiring English, English language skills for business are in high demand.

Half of the test is a listening (hearing) question

With the internationalization of corporations and the spread of the Internet, English language skills are becoming more and more necessary for Japanese people. Some of you may be thinking of studying English hard and working abroad in the future.
Against the backdrop of these times, the TOEIC(R) (Test of English as a Foreign Language) was launched as a test to evaluate the English language skills required by working people in the workplace. Unlike TOEFL(R), which tests English language skills for study abroad, TOEIC is designed to assess English communication skills in a broad range of areas.
The test questions cover a wide range of topics, from familiar everyday topics to expressions required in the business world. Half of the test consists of listening comprehension questions, and the other half consists of reading comprehension questions. Unlike the Eiken, it is not a pass/fail test, and scores range from 10 to 990.

Approximately 4.5 million people in 60 countries have taken the test.

TOEIC(R) is administered in about 60 countries around the world, and of the approximately 4 million people who took the test in FY2006, the majority were Japanese and Koreans. In Japan, not only working people but also university students who are about to start their careers are taking the test in large numbers.
The reason the test is now as popular as the "Eiken" is that many companies have adopted this test to select their employees. The English language skills that can be used in actual work are acquired on the job, but before that, the TOEIC(R) score is used to determine whether or not a person can speak English.
It is not only children who are struggling to learn English. Adults are also working hard day and night.
