The Map Geography Certification Test is jointly administered by the Japan Map Center and the Geographical Survey Institute of Japan to develop knowledge of maps and geography and the ability to read and use maps in an enjoyable manner.
The certification test covers maps and topographic maps, natural environment such as climate and disaster prevention, socio-cultural environment such as local resources and industries, and world and Japanese geography.
The examination is divided into two levels: "Basic" and "Specialized.
The "Basic" level tests basic knowledge and skills, and questions are based on what is learned in elementary and junior high school textbooks and events that have been discussed in the news. The exam consists of a total of 20 multiple-choice questions, and a score of 60 or higher out of 100 points is required to pass.
The "Specialty" section tests specialized knowledge, skills, and applied ability, and is similar to the content of high school-level studies and university entrance examinations. There are 24 questions in total, 15 of which are multiple choice and the remaining 9 are written. The top scorers are awarded Levels 1 to 3. The certification criteria vary each time depending on the average score, but generally, those who score 50-64 points on a 100-point scale receive Level 3 certification, those who score 65-79 points receive Level 2 certification, and those who score 80 points or higher receive Level 1 certification.

Basic" is best suited for junior high school students, but elementary school students can also aim for success.
