There are two routes to becoming a chef
There are two ways to obtain a chef's license.
One is to graduate from a culinary school (training facility) designated by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare. In this case, the license can be obtained without an examination. The other is to work as a chef at a restaurant for at least two years and then take and pass a chef examination administered by the prefectural governor.
For a further step up, there are also national certifications such as "professional chef" and "culinary technician. After obtaining a chef's license, one must have at least a certain number of years of experience in a restaurant or other setting to be eligible to take the exam.
